Moncton’s first public transit system began in 1896 when electric streetcars operated downtown at a cost of $0.25 per trip. Moncton City Council established Codiac Transpo as a wholly owned city department on August 1, 1980.

The City of Moncton's Department of Public Transit operates under the name of Codiac Transpo. The Department is responsible for providing residents with a safe, efficient urban public transportation service. Codiac services a population of 130,000 people in the Metro area (Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview). .
